Synopsis

Safety and Security in Local Communities - A Multidisciplinary Perspective. This book on multidisciplinary perspectives on security in local settings presents the work of the researchers of the Security in Local Communities - Comparing Rural and Urban Settings (2019-2024) programme group. The book comprises five parts: on the work of the programme group and the multidisciplinary and multiple perspectives of security in local settings, urban and rural perspectives on security, policing and policing and stakeholders in security provision in local settings, multiculturalism and responding to security risks, and cybersecurity in local communities. The contributions cover the following topics: security research, national and human security, public opinion on security, social ties and solidarity, rural criminology, feelings of security, juvenile delinquency, self-perception of police legitimacy, police performance, the organisation of municipal police forces and the cooperation of police forces with other security actors, Roma issues, vigilante groups, cyber-security, and offences against law and order on the internet.

Author Biographies

Gorazd Meško (ed.), University of Maribor, Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security

Gorazd Meško, Ph.D., is a professor of criminology, Head of the Chair of Criminology at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, University of Maribor and a lead researcher in a project on local safety and security. In 2014, he received the Zois Award for the field of social science – green criminology. In 2018, he was the president of the European Society of Criminology (ESC). Professor Meško is guest editor of Policing – An International Journal on Rural Police Activity (2024) and co-editor of the monograph on Rural Criminology – Continental Review (Bristol University Press, 2024).

Katja Eman, Ph.D., is an associate professor of criminology at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, University of Maribor. In the last decade, she participated in national and European research projects: Security and safety in local communities - Comparison of rural and urban environments (2019-2024), Legitimacy and legality of policing, criminal justice and execution of penal sanctions (2013-2016), Water crimes (2016-2017), SHINE - Sexual Harassment in Nightlife Entertainment spots (2020-2023).
