Synopsis

Tourism and Climate Change Mitigation: Development of a Model for Assessing the Carbon Footprint of Tourists Staying in Slovenia and Recommendations for Reducing Carbon Footprint in Slovenian Tourism. The present monograph is the result of the project "CRP V7-2128 Climate Change and Sustainable Tourism Development in Slovenia". It is a targeted research project aimed at formulating strategic proposals for reducing the carbon footprint of Slovenian tourism and adapting it to climate change based on actual data and an in-depth model that includes the specifics of data collection on tourism in Slovenia. The monograph presents results that address the following project objectives: 1. Formulating and testing a model for assessing the carbon footprint of tourists staying in Slovenia, at the destination level, with initial results provided; 2. Formulating strategic recommendations at the national, municipal, and public and private provider levels with measures aimed at monitoring and reducing the carbon footprint of Slovenian tourism. The results address the achievement of the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, the European Green Directive, the Slovenia 2030 Strategy, the Recovery and Resilience Plan, and the Strategy for Sustainable Development of Slovenian Tourism 2022-2028. The final recommendations contribute to the sustainable development of the Slovenian tourism and the consolidation of Slovenia as a green destination.

Author Biographies

Maja Turnšek (ed.), University of Maribor, Faculty of Tourism

Associate Professor Dr. Maja Turnšek is employed at the Faculty of Tourism, University of Maribor. Her background is in communication studies: in 2011, she obtained her PhD from the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, with a thesis on public deliberation on global public issues such as climate change. She then continued her academic career in tourism studies. At the Faculty of Tourism, University of Maribor, she covers interdisciplinary fields of communication and tourism. Her research intrests cover communication psychology in tourism, political economy of new media in tourism, and the intersection of communication, tourism, and climate change.

Tjaša Pogačar (ed.), University of Ljubljana, Biotehnical Faculty

Tjaša Pogačar graduated from Univ. B.Sc. a meteorologist who obtained her doctorate in the field of agrometeorology at the Faculty of Biotechnology. Here she is also employed as a university teacher as an assistant professor in the field of climatology. He leads a small group for agrometeorology at the Department of Agronomy, Department of Agrometeorology, agricultural land management and economics and rural development. Lectures on the basics of meteorology, biometeorology and climatology. He also conducts research in the aforementioned areas, with an emphasis on the effects of climate change on agriculture and people. In the last major projects, she researched the impact of heat stress on the well-being and productivity of workers, the vulnerability of agriculture to climate change, and the impact of climate conditions on the tourism sector.
