Synopsis

Reflection of Oneself in the Other: Slovenian Literature in Intercultural Context. The monograph consists of eleven studies on Slovenian literature in the Central European multicultural and intercultural area. With our cultural and literary history, we (the Slovenes) are part of Central Europe, where we were formed by different identities, which are also marked by migration. Our position was marked by the otherness and differentness, while at the same time, we accepted the otherness and used it to enrich ourselves. Various Slovenian literary works reflected anguish and divisions due to significant conceptual, ideological and political developments in the twentieth century.

The monograph follows the findings of modern literary science which show that in Slovenia we cannot talk only about Slovenian culture, but about cultures in Slovenia, and that in Slovenian literary histories we must take into account also the works of all those who have created or are still creating in other languages. At the same time, Dr. S. Borovnik advocates that the work of all Slovenian male and female writers who emigrated from Slovenia or live in other countries as members of the indigenous Slovenian national minority should also be taken into consideration. This monograph contributes to intercultural literary history. In it, the author proves that the monolingual and mononational model of literature does not exist and that it has been artificially created in the past for various, including ideological reasons.
