Synopsis

The chapter sheds light on the transformation of higher education in the context of the digital age, which has been further accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. The authors present the historical development of distance education and explain key concepts such as online, e- and blended learning. They also emphasize the dispersion and inconsistency of terminology, which causes confusion both in practice and in research. The chapter thus highlights the main challenges of digitalization in Slovenian higher education: differences in access to technology, uneven digital literacy, and the lack of pedagogically appropriate online content. The chapter is based on an analysis of current national and international documents, highlights good practices, and emphasizes the importance of a systemic approach in planning quality blended learning. The central message is that digital transformation in higher education must go beyond technical solutions and include a holistic understanding of pedagogical and organizational implications.
