Synopsis

Speech and language therapy is a discipline dedicated to identifying, treating and preventing speech and language disabilities, thereby making an important contribution to improving people's communication skills. This chapter examines the contributions of speech and language therapists in Slovenia, focusing on their educational pathways, career prospects and the various professional settings they engage with, including healthcare, education and social care environments. A significant emphasis is placed on the education of speech and language therapists, equipping students with the necessary competencies to assist individuals with speech and language disabilities. The chapter also addresses the increasing demand for qualified professionals and the importance of early and integrated treatment for individuals of all ages. The conclusion stresses the need to expand training opportunities and enhance access to speech and language therapy services in Slovenia.

Author Biographies

Milena Ivanuš Grmek, University of Maribor, Faculty of Education

Milena Ivanuš Grmek, PhD, is a full professor of pedagogy at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Education. Her main research areas are learning and teaching in different educational fields, curriculum changes and higher education didactics. She is responsible for teaching students the didactics at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is a supervisor of students' diploma, master's and doctoral theses. She has published scientific and specialized texts in Slovenian and in foreign journals and participated in scientific conferences in Slovenia and abroad. Considering her current position at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Education, she is Dean.

Monika Mithans, University of Maribor, Faculty of Education

Monika Mithans, PhD, is an assistant professor in the field of pedagogy at the Faculty of Education, Department of Fundamental Pedagogical Subjects at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. Her main areas of research are: school participation, modernization of the educational process and curriculum changes.

Darja Plavčak, University of Maribor, Faculty of Education

Darja Plavčak, PhD, is an assistant professor in the field of special education at the Faculty of Education, Department of Fundamental Pedagogical Subjects at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. Her primary research areas include approaches to fostering social skills in students with special needs, the vulnerability and life circumstances of families of children with special needs, the use of generative artificial intelligence for children with special needs, and intervision among professionals in education.
