Synopsis

Monitoring (Identification, Monitoring) and Function of Beneficial Organisms in Apple Orchards. The professional monography was created during the implementation of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) 16.5 project entitled Environmental aspects of the transition to organic fruit production. The content is environmentally and sustainably oriented, but still aimed at successful and sufficient production of high–value food. In recent years, we have witnessed the fact that a large number of consumers strongly favor organic food, but at the same time do not want or are unable to pay its slightly higher price. Most growers would like to serve consumers, but are aware of the greater risks stemming from the smaller range and lower effectiveness of plant protection products allowed in organic production. The fact is that satisfactory control of the development of populations of harmful organisms in organic fruit production system is certainly not possible only by replacing plant protection products, therefore the content of this monograph is intended to present the function and monitoring of beneficial organisms in apple orchards as key actors for successful organic fruit production.

Tatjana Unuk, University of Maribor, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Dr. Tatjana Unuk received her master's degree in 2001 at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Zagreb and received her PHD in 2006 at the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences of the UM. She was habilitated to the title of full professor in the field of horticulture in 2018. She is a member of the program group at FALS UM (P1-0164: Research to ensure safe food and health). She conducts research in the field of studying the responsiveness of fruit plants in terms of quantity and selected yield quality parameters to different growing conditions, which includes both the influence of different growing systems (IFP, ECO, ...) and the influence of factors that change lighting conditions (intensity, changed light spectrum) and microclimate conditions (e.g. installation of hail nets nets of various types) in the orchards. She also deals with the issue of determining the various risks (biotic and abiotic) that growers encounter in production and harvesting technologies, especially those on the transition to organic fruit production. A large part of her research work includes the creation of predictive models for monitoring and evaluating selected criteria that determine the quality and storage potential of fruit. In her work, she also studies the importance of adapting technological measures in fruit production to both consumer demands and current climate changes, which also include the need to adapt interpretations of determining the optimal harvest time and the need to adapt storage strategies. From 2016 to 2019, dr. Tatjana Unuk was vice-dean for educational activities at FALS UM, she is head of the Fruit Growing and Fruit Processing Department and head of the Master's study program Agriculture at FALS UM.
