Synopsis

Art Appreciation In Education: Examples Of Qualitative Research- The scientific monograph consists of 6 main chapters. In the introduction, creativity and appreciation are presented as two fundamental aspects of fine art lessons. In the following, the development of the term ‘art appreciation’ is terminologically defined. The chapter on the basic characteristics of art appreciation describes the factors of art appreciation, The structure of art appreciation is presented next, which includes art knowledge and time as important factors. The next chapter describes the layers of the work of art, since the multi-layered nature of art works permits a variety of approaches to the development of art appreciation. An overview is presented in the next extensive chapter, qualitative empirical research, which systematically describes the design, instruments, implementation, and research results. These were achieved in kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools, involving students from various fields of study in Slovenia and abroad.

Author Biographies

Matjaž Duh, University of Maribor, Faculty of Education

Matjaž Duh PhD is a full professor of special didactics in the field of fine arts at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor. He presents various contents in the field of art pedagogy to students of the first, second and third Bologna level, where he also mentors their final works. His scientific research field includes the field of artistic creativity, artistic appreciation, artistic design and artistic intellectual abilities of children and adolescents. He is also researching the introduction of contemporary art practices in primary school art curricula. He is a reviewer in many reputable foreign journals, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Elementary Education and a member of the editorial boards of scientific journals abroad. As a visiting professor, she has lectured at many universities abroad. He is the author and co-author of numerous scientific and professional articles and monographs. He is also active in the field of fine arts and is a member of the Maribor Association of Fine Artists (DLUM) and the Association of Slovenian Fine Artists (ZDSLU).

Jerneja Herzog, University of Maribor, Faculty of Education

Jerneja Herzog PhD is an associate professor of special didactics in the field of fine arts at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor. As a visiting professor, she has lectured at many universities abroad. She is the author and co-author of numerous scientific and professional articles and monographs. She coordinated several projects. For her achievements in 2019 she received the Rector's Award for Outstanding Scientific Research and Pedagogical Achievements and in the same year as the coordinator of the project group the state award honorary Valvasor Award for research work in the field of blind and partially sighted. Her research interests include the field of artistic creativity and artistic abilities at various stages of development of children, pupils and high school students, artistic appreciation, contemporary fine arts in various curricula, bringing art and cultural heritage closer to vulnerable groups. She is a reviewer in many reputable foreign journals and technical editor of the Journal of Elementary Education.
