Synopsis

Cell Biology: Instructions for Laboratory Work for Students of the Pharmacy Study Program. The work is a collection of laboratory exercises for the subject Cell Biology of the Pharmacy study program. The main topics are the study of the characteristics of human cells with a light microscope, histological and histochemical methods for the analysis of human cells, cell ultrastructure, biosynthetic and secretory pathways, cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix, and examples of cells with a specific function. The structure of the selected cell type enables the specific function of this cell. Students should understand this connection between structure and function, which can be recognized at the level of both cells and tissues. The latter allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the functioning of organs and organ systems.

Author Biographies

Barbara Dariš, University of Maribor, Faculty of Medicine

Dr. Barbara Dariš has been employed at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maribor since October 2004 as the head of the laboratory work for the Cell Biology course. She is the author of several study publications for the Cell Biology course for students of Medicine and Biology. Her research interests include studying human cells with light, fluorescence and electron microscopy and testing the effects of various agents on cells in culture.

Saška Lipovšek, University of Maribor, Faculty of Medicine

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saška Lipovšek teaches the study course Cell Biology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maribor, and the courses Cell Biology and Cytology and Histology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University of Maribor. Her research focuses on the structural characteristics of various tissues and organs of vertebrates and invertebrates at the cellular level. She is the author of laboratory manuals for the Cell Biology course, intended for students of Medicine and Biology, as well as for the General Zoology course for Biology students.
