Freedom of Style and (Non)Freedom of the Translator in the Case of Christine Nöstlinger’s Juvenile Works

Synopsis

The paper problematises the (in)ability of Christine Nöstlinger's style to translate, using the example of the translations of two of her works for young people into Slovene. The qualitative analysis confirmed that the typical translation problems of the German > Slovene language pair cannot be avoided in Christine Nöstlinger's juvenile works either. The problematic nature of the method of functionally similar communicative value of the source and target text and the compensation of lexical and other linguistic resources was demonstrated. The analysis further showed the problem of giving priority to the word-formation characteristics of the target language over the functional value of individual structures, and the failure to take into account the specific use of certain structures. The preservation of pluricentric relations in German was also shown to be problematic, using the example of Austriacisms and various cultural elements.
