Synopsis

The 20th European Meeting on Supercritical Fluids (EMSF 2024) was hosted by the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the University of Maribor from 26 May to 29 May 2024 in Maribor, Slovenia. The EMSF 2024 was a joint event of the International Society for the Advancement of Supercritical Fluids (ISASF) and the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE) Working Party on High Pressure Technology (WP HPT) Event No. 807. This symposium provided an excellent opportunity for engineers, chemists, physicists, food technologists, and biologists to meet and discuss new ideas, review ongoing challenges, present potential solutions, and identify future issues related to high pressure technologies and supercritical fluids. The aim of the meeting was to deepen connections between researchers, establish new contacts, and promote synergies and partnerships between researchers. The symposium presented the latest advances in high-pressure process technologies that can contribute to the further development of the field.

Author Biographies

Željko Knez (ed.), University of Maribor, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Academic prof. dr. Željko Knez former Dean and is current Vice dean of Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, in the past he was executive rector and vice rector of University of Maribor. He graduated and obtain PhD from Maribor University. Subsequently he made research at University of Wageningen (Netherlands) and University of Erlangen (Germany) in the field of separation processes. In the past he was member of Executive board of European Federation of Chemical Engineering, he was head of WP "High pressure technologies" of EFCE from 2003 to 2010. He established the high-pressure laboratory in year 1985 and today there are 30 researchers working on separation processes and product design. In 1999, on the basis of patent EP1144561, a pilot plant was built in the technology park, where today the company with 70 employees produces approximately 400 tonnes per year of concentrated natural antioxidants (99.99% export). With his “spin off” company he acts as a consultant of many industrial projects on high pressure plants world-wide. Prof Knez has published more than 366 scientific articles and review articles, 29 chapters in books and 26 patents.

His work has more than 14500 citations and h-index 63. Since 2014 he is member of European Academy of Sciences and Arts, since 2017 he is member of Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and since 2019 he is member of Croatian Academy of Engineering.

Milica Pantić (ed.), University of Maribor, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Dr. Milica Pantić has been working at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology since 2013. In 2017 she successfully completed her PhD through the European Marie Curie project. Her research interest is focused on supercritical fluids. Her primary research interest is the preparation of polysaccharide aerogels. Her research focuses on the synthesis and optimisation of aerogels and impregnation of aerogels with different bioactive ingredients using supercritical fluids. Recently, she has extended her research to the field of supercritical foaming. She is actively involved in many projects. She is a reviewer for several international journals and a co-mentor for first and second bologna degree students.
