Synopsis

This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to modern systems procedures in the design of machines and devices. The main purpose of the textbook is first to provide simple guidance on how to meet the general requirements for the safety of machinery, set out in the relevant European and Slovenian legislation. Then, some guidelines for the ergonomic design of machinery are given. The main part of the textbook deals with the hazards and risk assessment associated with the mechanical design and use of machinery, and the complex subject of machine safety engineering is also described in detail. Finally, the basic environmental impacts of machinery are briefly described. The textbook is primarily intended for students of mechanical engineering in the course Design of Machines and Devices, but is also suitable for courses on related topics. The textbook contains a number of practical examples and is therefore also a useful aid for mechanical design engineers, who deal with the problems of machine design and safety in their daily practice.

Author Biographies

Janez Kramberger , University of Maribor, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

Janez Kramberger is a full professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maribor. He teaches at all three levels of study. He is an expert in the fields of mechanical design, fatigue of materials, fracture mechanics, dimensioning of machine parts and structures, and safety and reliability of engineering systems. His research work includes modern methods of engineering simulations and experimental research. It has a good research record and established international cooperation. It has very successful cooperation with industry at home and abroad. It publishes the results of its work in national and international scientific and professional journals and participates in international conferences. He has passed the professional examination at Slovenian Chamber of Enginers for Certified Engineer in the field of mechanical engineering.

Stanislav Pehan, University of Maribor, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

Stanislav Pehan holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Maribor, where he is currently an associate professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. His research work is mainly concerned with drives and gearboxes, vehicle transmissions, determination of service life of machine parts and components, and experimental research. He is an active member of the Structural Evaluation Laboratory, where he and his colleagues conduct a number of technical and research projects for industry. He is the author of numerous textbooks, scientific monographs, and scientific papers.

Srečko Glodež, University of Maribor, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

Srečko Glodež holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Maribor, Slovenia. His research activities are focused on the field of fatigue problems, fracture mechanics, the dimensioning of machine parts and structures, numerical analysis, and experimental research. His research group collaborates with industry and professional institutions within the framework of industrial and scientific projects, and he is the author of a number of books and journal articles.
