Synopsis

Handbook of Pedagogical Practices' Examples of Teaching and Learning at the University Level with a Focus on Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The Handbook of pedagogical practices' examples of teaching and learning at the university level with a focus on natural sciences and mathematics is intended for all university teachers, who want to introduce proven pedagogical practices into their teaching in order to improve academic success and empower students. The handbook presents the process of acquiring knowledge from discovery to application through a scale of technology readiness levels. We want to emphasize the limited resources such as knowledge, intelligence, emotional intelligence, empathy, time, attention, trust, and the importance of their optimal use. Through concrete examples of highly effective pedagogical practices, we want to encourage teachers to introduce innovative methods into the pedagogical process and combine them with traditional ones.

Author Biographies

Drago Bokal, University of Maribor, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Drago Bokal is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Maribor and a member of Graph theory research group. His results are in the areas of graph crossing numbers, graph coloring, and development of graph optimization algorithms, which are used in biology and telecommunications. He is applying results for modelling learning, where he is interested in the relationships between reinforcement learning, optimal time usage, and emotional states induced in the process. He is applying the theory into practice through innovative teaching practices at the courses mathematical modelling, combinatorial optimization, and operations research. His skills in practical applications of his research originate in collaboration with the company DataBitLab that he co-founded.

Robert Repnik, University of Maribor, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Robert Repnik is an associate professor of physics at the University of Maribor and was a member of the Computational Intensive Complex Systems research team. He is a member of the Pedagogical Network of the University of Maribor, where he is involved in sharing teaching practices at faculties. His research areas are liquid crystals and didactics of physics. In didactics, he studies the effectiveness of implementations of modern contents and technologies in physics, the development of teaching astronomy, and didactic approaches in the use of ICT. He was the coordinator of the project Development of Natural Science Competences. His other engagements are the popularization of science and participates in the organization of workshops, competitions, and science fares.
