Synopsis

The 8th book of Personalities (orig. Osebnosti) focuses on the life, work, and legacy of France Borko, a teacher and writer who, in the first half of the 20th century, significantly influenced the cultural life of Maribor with his dedication to writing and cultural participation. The Introduction addresses the purpose of this publication and presents the characteristics of Borko's legacy, preserved in the Manuscript Collection of the University of Maribor Library. The central part of the publication is the presentation of Borko’s life and work, based on various documents and other sources. The biographical overview is complemented by a selection of Borko's documentary materials, showcased in a separate chapter. Another important component is his bibliography, which systematically and comprehensively presents his life and work. As a special addition, the publication includes a list of dialect expressions from the Središče ob Dravi area, which Borko compiled on Fran Saleški Finžgar’s request.

Author Biographies

Valerija Stopar (ed.), University of Maribor Library

Valerija Stopar has a Master's degree in Slovenian Studies and Comparative Literature. She has been employed as a librarian in the Local History and Special Collections Department at the University of Maribor Library since 2023.

Gabrijel Elko Borko

Elko Borko (PhD), a gynecologist and lecturer at the medical faculties, laid the foundations for modern gynecological practice in Slovenia with his work and expertise. In 1963, he began working in the gynecology department at the General Hospital in Maribor. He specialized in reproductive medicine, contraception, and infertility treatment, aiding in the establishment of Maribor as a key centre for such procedures. From 1974 to 1990, he served as the head of the Gynecology Clinic at University Medical Centre Maribor. His contributions significantly advanced Slovenian healthcare and earned him numerous accolades. He remains highly active as the president of the Medico-Historical Section of the Slovenian Medical Association and as an amateur researcher of the history of medicine and local history.
