Synopsis

Chapters from the History of the East Styrian Language. The Monograph Chapters on the History of the East Styrian Language is the seventh independent book by Marko Jesenšek, winner of the Zois Prize for outstanding scientific and research achievements in the field of Slovene. Marko Jesenšek's scholarly work enriched Slovene linguistic behavior in two ways, (1) on the one hand, with a series of insights into the Slovene literary language that had not yet been acquired - including those who, for various reasons, were ignored in the past -, (2) on the other hand, his research work clearly shows which questions remain open and which will need to become the subject of further research. Research work by prof. dr. Marko Jesenška shows the author's independence in relation to the chosen subject and his own use of the theory. In terms of content and subject matter, Jesenšek's research into the history of the (Eastern) Slovene literary language is a complete whole, adapted to all the scientific requirements of contemporary research into language development. Extensive narrative and historical material is convincingly linked in a transparent outline of Slovene literary norms and interlingual provincial interlaces from Slovenia and abroad, which successfully continue the research work done in Slovenia so far, expand its problematic scope, interpret already known and discover new lessons in the history of the Slovenian language. Jesenschk's research work is very consistent and based on a good knowledge of linguistic and methodological issues. Particular emphasis is also placed on his consideration of professional literature in other fields of the humanities, as well as his ability to connect and creatively consider their findings in research into the Slovenian language. It is characterized by prudent and mature thinking, complemented by systematic breakthroughs in linguistic research. He sees the Slovenian language not only as an expression of individual scientific confession in the wider cultural and historical context, but also as a result of a certain state of social consciousness and spirit of users of the Slovenian language, which is a characteristic and essential identity of Slovenes. In his detailed analyzes, he always seeks out a more general cultural and historical context, and always pays attention to the fact that he does not lose sight of the specific laws of creative processes. It is from such principles that a linguistic position is formed, in which Jesenšek always strictly adheres to methodological clarity.
