Synopsis

Python in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering:  Textbook for the Course Computer Science in Chemistry. The textbook Python in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is intended for first-year students who are new to computer programming. It provides a clear and systematic introduction to the fundamentals of the Python programming environment and gradually demonstrates its application in solving selected problems from chemistry and chemical engineering. In addition to the basics, it introduces students to modern digital approaches such as data analysis and artificial intelligence, offering insight into current trends in the chemical engineering profession. Author Biographies

Zorka Novak Pintarič, University of Maribor, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Zorka Novak Pintarič is a Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Maribor. Her research focuses on process optimization, integration, and economics, as well as chemical process safety and computational modeling in chemical engineering. She emphasizes developing methods for sustainable and circular processes and integrating advanced digital tools with engineering approaches. She leads research and development projects and supervises bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students. She is committed to using modern pedagogical methods and fostering a supportive learning environment where students hold a central role. Through her work, she promotes the integration of natural sciences, engineering, and digital technologies.

Sanja Potrč, University of Maribor, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Dr. Sanja Potrč is a researcher and teaching assistant at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Maribor. She develops methods and mathematical models for the synthesis and optimization of supply networks and processes, integrating the concepts of sustainability and circularity. Her research places particular emphasis on process integration, the integration of renewable energy sources, waste valorization, and the reduction of environmental impacts. She is actively involved in research projects. As a co-supervisor and teaching assistant, she works in the fields of process dynamics and optimization, cleaner production, and product and process development, where she introduces students to the use of computer-aided modeling for addressing challenges in chemical engineering.

Miloš Bogataj, University of Maribor, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Miloš Bogataj is an assistant professor of Chemical engineering at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Maribor. His research interests include simulation of chemical processes and mathematical programming, with an emphasis on general disjunctive programming, mixed-integer nonlinear programming, and the development of algorithms for global optimization of nonconvex engineering problems.
