Synopsis

Citizen Science in 5 Steps: Planning and Designing Projects. Citizen Science in 5 Steps: Planning and Designing Projects comprehensively presents the concept of citizen science, which is not only a method of collecting scientific data with the help of non-professional researchers, but also a way of connecting scientific research with communities and individuals who actively participate in solving current research problems, thereby democratizing science. The publication takes readers (researchers as well as high school and university students, members of various associations, representatives of different social groups, amateur researchers, and the wider interested public) through the history and terminology of citizen science, and then explains five key steps in planning and designing citizen science projects: from defining the research problem, designing a plan, and building a community of participants, to creating and analyzing data and sharing results. The handbook can be read from cover to cover or it can be used as a guide for a specific step in the planning and design of a citizen science project.

Author Biographies

Uroš Kunaver, Central Technical Library at the University of Ljubljana

Dr. Uros Kunaver began his career as a researcher at the Jozef Stefan Institute, where he became familiar with the methods of scientific work. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Ljubljana in 1996. Shortly thereafter, he was employed by the Central Technical Library at the University of Ljubljana, where he currently leads the Department of Open Science and Information Technology. In his free time, as a member of a caving club, he often volunteered to participate in speleobiological research conducted by fellow members, who were researchers or studied at the University of Ljubljana. In doing so, he has gained considerable experience in the field of citizen science methods.

Tea Romih, Central Technical Library at the University of Ljubljana

Dr. Tea Romih is a former researcher who has been working as a data steward at the Central Technical Library at the University of Ljubljana since 2022. She obtained her pre-Bologna diploma in Biology in 2011 and a PhD in Nanosciences in 2016, both from the University of Ljubljana. During her participation in the Young Academy of Slovenia, she began working in the areas of open science, research assessment, and research integrity. After a short stint at the National Institute of Chemistry between 2019 and 2022, she decided to change her career path and dedicate herself to these topics professionally. She currently coordinates the SPOZNAJ project, which aims to introduce open science practices to Slovenian public research organizations.
