In front of you are memories and glimpses, an attempt at a historical record of Slovenian textiles and the people - textile workers, who left their mark on the development of Slovenian textiles in the period from 1930 to the beginning of the 80s.

Author Biography

Jože Debevc, University of Maribor

The life path of Jože Debevac began in Maribor on June 7, 1931. He finished primary and middle school in Maribor. In November 1946, the young man, who was not yet sixteen years old, got a job in the Maribor cotton weaving mill Maribor as a textile worker - a weaver. Through education and hard work, he soon advanced to become a technical manipulator.
In 1948, the management of the company sent him to the Textile Technical College in Kranj as a scholarship holder. He graduated in 1951. In the same year, he left for military service.
In the fall of 1952, he returned to Maribor and got a job at the Maribor textile factory as a foreman, and soon after he was appointed a reverse technician. Organization, planning, design - these were the areas that fascinated him. In 1958, he was appointed planner of the MTT looms and, when the disposition department was established, its manager.
While working, in 1971 he graduated from the first level of the Higher Economic and Commercial School in Maribor. In 1975, the management of the company entrusted him with a responsible task, namely the management of the newly established marketing department.
In 1978, he was offered a new life challenge - a secretarial position at the Technical College in Maribor. He worked successfully as a school secretary until his retirement.
Jožet's outside textile involvement was rich and varied. From the end of 1953 to 1962, he was an actor and manager of the amateur theater Slava Klavor in Maribor. For eight years, he participated in the Cultural Community of Maribor, where he was its president for four years, and in the Cultural Community of Slovenia as president of the users' assembly. He is the writer and director of numerous events and academies at MIT and at the Maribor University of Technology.
In 1963, he was elected secretary of the Slovenian Textile Society, later the Union of Textile Engineers and Technicians of Slovenia. He was its secretary for three decades.
For his creative work, he was awarded the Order of Merit to the Nation with a Silver Star (1973) and the Order of Merit to the Nation with a Bronze Wreath. The University of Maribor awarded him the UM silver plaque (1983). The Maribor Association and the Slovenian Federation of Textile Workers elected him an honorary and meritorious member.
