The Maribor Slavic Society was founded on December 10, 1975, and officially entered into the register of societies on June 7, 1976. Its foundation marked a turning point in the organized activities of Maribor Slavists, who had until then operated as a branch of the Slovenian Slavic Society for almost twenty years.

At its foundation, the society had 75 members. They were mostly teachers of the Slovenian language and literature in primary and secondary schools and professors from the then Pedagogical Academy in Maribor. The Maribor Slavic Society reached a peak of sorts in 1983 and 1984, when it had as many as 167 members.

The society also strengthened its role through lectures, conferences, journalistic activities and cooperation with other cultural and scientific institutions.
