Synopsis

ZORA 160: The Excellence of the Slovene Language a Hundred Years after Pleteršnik. The Slovene language was in Pleteršnik’s time a synonym for the Slovene nation. The equation language = nation enabled our predecessors in the 19th century within the framework of Austro-Hungarian pressures to establish themselves as an independent and historical nation. It also ena-bled them to demand the rights already bestowed on other nations in this multi-national Austro-Hungarian alliance. Pleteršnik’s dictionary has thus secured the excellence of the Slovene language a place among immortals. The monograph covers the broadest of the Slovene territory – slightly beyond a century after Pleteršnik’s death we endeavour to see how much of Pleteršnik’s excellence still remains in our language in the 21st century, as globalization and senseless anglicisation have attempted to marginalize it and push it out of public use, letting it linger as it had for centuries be-fore Pleteršnik came. Pleteršnik’s linguistic heritage is in this monograph being scrutinized from both the language-political and the literary-cultural points of view.
