Synopsis

The academic monograph “Sports and Law: Finding a Balance Between the Game and the Rules” addresses current and carefully selected topics in the field of ‘sports law’. It represents a significant contribution to the development of sports law, which has been increasingly developed in recent decades as an independent and interdisciplinary legal field. It brings together contributions from authors in Slovenia, Croatia, the U.S., Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Slovakia. It addresses current issues related to the relationship between sports as a social phenomenon and law as a system of rules governing this field. The central idea of the monograph is the search for a balance between two seemingly opposing worlds: between ‘play’ or ‘sport’, which is based on spontaneity, competitiveness, and the rules of the game, and ‘law’, which introduces formal norms, sanctions, and institutional oversight. Sports law is not a uniform, codified branch of law, but rather an interweaving of various legal fields, such as contract law, labor law, criminal law, and human rights law, among others. The monograph offers an in-depth look at the complex field of sports law and highlights the need for a balanced approach that considers the specificities of sports as well as fundamental legal principles.
