Development and Potential of Rural Tourism in Međimurje: The Case of Podrum Štrigova Ltd. / St. Jerome
Synopsis
This paper analyses rural tourism in the Međimurje region, focusing on its development and diverse tourist offer, including agrotourism, cultural tourism, and wine tourism. Particular attention is given to natural resources, cultural heritage, and local gastronomy as key elements of the region’s tourist identity and visitor attraction. Štrigova is highlighted as one of the most important rural and wine tourism destinations in Međimurje, known for its strong winegrowing tradition and diverse wine experiences. In this context, Podrum Štrigova, namely the St. Jerome Winery, plays an important role through its enological offer and additional tourist activities. Wine tours, tastings, presentations of indigenous grape varieties, and cultural-gastronomic programs enhance the tourist experience and strengthen the destination’s eno-gastronomic appeal. A SWOT analysis identifies key strengths and weaknesses, particularly limited infrastructure and accommodation capacities. Planned development projects, including improvements to the Podrum Štrigova / St. Jerome Winery offer, aim to increase competitiveness and improve visitor experience. In conclusion, the paper stresses the importance of a strategic approach to the development of rural tourism in Međimurje through the integration of agriculture and tourism to ensure sustainable development, preserving local identity, and creating a recognizable and competitive tourist offer.
