From Traditional Construction Practices to a Digital Enterprise: The Case of GIC GRADNJE d. o. o.
Synopsis
This case study examines the process of digital transformation in GIC GRADNJE d. o. o., a family-owned construction company with more than 35 years of tradition in the Slovenian market. The construction sector has long been characterised by low levels of digitalisation, low productivity, and limited adoption of advanced technologies, which negatively affect the competitiveness of companies operating in the industry. The study aims to analyse how digital transformation can improve business efficiency and reshape organisational processes in a traditionally organised economic sector. The analysis is based on a qualitative research approach, including a review of secondary sources, an analysis of company documentation, and a semi-structured interview with the head of development. Particular attention is devoted to the “Construction 4.0” project, which serves as the central framework for the company’s digital transformation. The results show that digital transformation involves not only the introduction of new technologies but also changes in business processes, organisational structure, and the company’s digital culture. In the analysed company, improvements were observed in project transparency, data traceability, interdepartmental collaboration, and the development of employees’ digital competencies. The analysed case, therefore, serves as a good practice example of digital transformation in the construction sector and offers useful insights for companies facing similar challenges.
