Synopsis

Residential block neighbourhoods in Maribor. Residential block neighbourhoods were the dominant concept of urban development between 1945 and 1990 in all parts of the world, regardless of the economic and social arrangements. They were created in response to specific social conditions, rapid urbanization and industrialization. The study examined 40 residential neighbourhoods with blocks of flats in Maribor from the point of view of morphological, and functional characteristics, and also examined the floor plan of the residential neighbourhoods, thus the fundamental parts. Block neighbourhoods were addressed at the town level, the neighbourhood itself and at the apartment level. The morphological and functional analysis of the neighbourhoods showed the conception of the neighbourhood, the typology of buildings, the land use and activities in the neighbourhood. The analysis of residential blocks was limited to the structure, number and type of floor plan. Based on this, we have identified four phases of neighbourhood construction that resulted from housing policy, urban development, and changing the idea of a residential block neighbourhood.
