Synopsis

This book focuses on court interpreting, an interesting and upgrowing area of research in translation studies as a relatively young interdisciplinary science. Court intepreting is compulsory in asylum proceedings, police interrogations, court hearings, and healthcare when foreign citizens are involved who do not speak or understand Slovenian as the official language. This increased interest stems from the fact that recently many countries which previously had limited experience with foreign citizens are now facing increasing economic migration, which poses certain challenges and requires appropriate language policies and additional training for court interpreters. Court interpreters are experts and specialists in multilingual mediation who act as intermediaries between the court as a state institution and foreign citizens who are unfamiliar with legal and regulatory proceedures and do not understand or speak the language of the judiciary, which is in our case Slovenian. This interdisciplinary book seeks ways and means to improve cooperation between court interpreters and legal experts. The discussion focuses on the establishment and development of intercultural legal interpreting clinics, which enable training and education of future interpreters and lawyers, and the results of research in the light of the international TRANSLaw project.

Author Biographies

Vlasta Kučiš, University of Maribor, Faculty of Arts

Vlasta Kučiš is a full professor in the field of translation and interpreting at the Department of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor. She heads the international network and translation studies academy TRANS (TRANScultural Communication and TRANSlation) and the research group Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication (2565-010). She is a member of the Commission for the Examination of Professional Knowledge of Future Court Interpreters for the German Language at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Slovenia. At ARIS, she is involved in the work of the Scientific Research Council for Interdisciplinary Research. As a lecturer, researcher, and member of the TRANSLaw and EDU-FIT project groups, she regularly participates in Erasmus and CEEPUS exchanges and attends numerous international conferences on communication, translation, and interpreting. Her research interests include intercultural communication, court interpreting, professional translation, and the theory and history of translation.

Miha Šepec, University of Maribor, Faculty of Law

Miha Šepec, Associate Professor of Criminal Law, graduated in 2010 from the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana and later in 2015 received his PhD in Criminal Law from the Faculty of Law, University of Maribor. He has published more than 250 works in the field of criminal law, international and constitutional law. Miha Šepec specializes in cybercrime, criminal law theory, criminal procedure, media law and criminal constitutional doctrine. He is the author of the scientific book Cybercrime: Criminal Offenses and Criminal Law Analysis, the editor and the first author of the Commentary on the Criminal Code, the editor and the first author of the Commentary on the Criminal Procedure Act and one of the authors of the Commentary on the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia.

Natalia Kaloh Vid, University of Maribor, Faculty of Arts

Ddr. Natalia Kaloh Vid is an Associate Professor at the Department of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor. She teaches various courses on intercultural communication, professional translations and translation theory. She holds a PhD. degree in English Literature and Translation studies which focuses on the influence of ideology on literary translation. Her second Ph.D. degree is in Contemporary Russian Literature. She is the author of five scientific monographies and more than 100 scientific articles and chapters. As a guest lecturer, she lectured at the universities in Scotland, Ireland, England, Austria, Poland, Serbia and Bulgaria and participated as a researcher in various international projects. The list of her publications includes articles on the influence of ideology on translations, translating culturally-specific elements and retranslation.
